materials from our school community.  We are looking for:

Books - gently used and in good condition

Cardboard - flattened corrugated cardboard boxes

Plastic Containers - large containers with lids like the Kawartha Dairy ice cream tub

Building Materials - Lego, K’nex, wooden building blocks, etc.

Craft Supplies - cardboard tubes, yarn, knitting needles, string,

pipe cleaners, Popsicle sticks, fabric, buttons, origami paper, etc.

Scholastic Book Fair is Here!

The Scholastic Book Fair is back, bigger and better than ever!

This year the Book Fair is in December to allow students an opportunity to shop for both themselves and for gifts for others such as siblings, parents, grandparents, and teachers.

The teachers have created wish lists of books they would like for their classrooms. These lists are displayed at the Book Fair so that students may purchase the books as gifts for their teachers if they wish.

If you and/or your child wish to purchase Book Fair items you can do one of the following:

1. Send cash (in an envelope) or cheque (payable to Pilgrim Wood Public School) with your child on Tuesday, Dec.12th (grades 1-4) or Wednesday, Dec. 13th (grades 5-8).

2. Visit the Book Fair from 5:00 - 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14th, which is the evening of the PW Holiday Concert.

For every $10 spent at the Book Fair, Pilgrim Wood gets back $6 in profits.

The Canadian Children's Book Centre and TD grade one give-away title, Good morning, Canada by Andrea Beck is available for pick-up at any of the Oakville Public Library branches starting on Thursday October 26.

Welcome to the 2017/18 School Year!

Book exchange started this week in the Pilgrim Wood Library.  I love to see the excitement as students look for their favourite books or discover new books.  Books are due two weeks after the checkout date, but many students return their books after one week so they can sign out new books.

Here is the weekly book exchange schedule for students in grades K - 5/6:

Open Space for Grades 6 to 8 

Students in grades 6 to 8 can exchange their books during Open Space.  Open Space happens during period 5 every day.  Students must first ask their teacher for a note in order to come to Open Space.

Happy Summer Reading Pilgrim Wood!

In Celebration of Canada's 150th year, the Pilgrim Wood Library is offering a reading contest called "I Read Canada".  

• Pick up your "I Read Canada" card at the Library.
• Read 3 books either by a Canadian author or about Canada.  
• For each book read, ask an adult to initial your "I Read Canada" card under a maple leaf.
• Bring your completed card to the library and put it in the draw jar for your chance to win cool Canada prizes!

March is Women's History Month

 

Every Day Is Malala Day by Rosemary McCarney

A 5W Book Summary by Josie, a Grade 4 Student

Who: Malala is a person that wanted girls to get the education that boys did. But she and her friends got shot because they thought that a bullets would keep girls quiet.

Why: Malala wanted girls to get the same education as boys, make a change in the world and help women rights. Boys did not have to work to go to school and girls had to work a lot to go to school.

What: Malala helped lots of girls to get an education by changing people’s minds so girls could go to school. They shot Malala with a bullet but it did not stop her.

Where: Malala was shot in Pakistan. But she was on her way to school and she got shot on her way to school. She got shot by a member on the Taliban because she was speaking up for girls.

When: Malala Yousafzai was shot on October 9, 2012 when she was fifteen years old. Malala did her speech in front of a thousand of people on July 12, 2013 on her 16th birthday.

My book choice was “Who was Amelia Earhart”, by Kate Boehm Jerome and illustrated by David Cain.

Who was Amelia Earhart?

Amelia Earhart was a pioneer, writer, speaker and the first woman ever to be a airplane pilot.

What did Amelia Earhart attempt?

She was the first woman to attempt to fly across the world in an airplane. Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan (her navigator) went missing around the Pacific Ocean when she was forty years old.

What did Amelia Earhart accomplish? She worked hard to make sure women had more equal rights when at the time they did not have very much equality. By being the first female airplane pilot she opened many opportunities in aviation for women.

Where was Amelia Earhart born?

Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison, Kansas and then moved to Los Angeles and Chicago. She also spent some time in Toronto.

When was Amelia Earhart born?

She was born July 24,1897, went missing on July 2, 1937 and she was married to George Putnam on February 7, 1931.

Why was Amelia Earhart important? Amelia Earhart was an important figure in history because she was a courageous woman who helped women’s rights at a time when women had very little equality.

  

 Freedom to Read Week at the Pilgrim Wood Library

February 26 – March 4, 2017

This is a display of books that have been challenged and/or banned from other libraries. The students at Pilgrim Wood are encouraged to read these books and to celebrate their freedom to read!

Book Review by Amanda, a Grade 5 Student

Crossing To Freedom              

by: Virginia Frances Schwartz

                                                                                                    Solomon,Levi and Grandpa Jacob all headed to freedom. They were slaves and didn’t like it one bit. They ran away with slave catchers on their backs until Grandpa Jacob couldn’t take it. So they left him at a safe spot to rest and were off on their way. After a long walk they found a place where they can earn money and be happy for a while.

I like this book because it has a very good story line.
